Twachtman brothers treasure

The Georgian treasure at 69 Vineyard Lane represents another fine example of the lasting architectural influence left in Greenwich by the offspring of a famous American impressionist.

The six-bedroom landmark residence, on the market for $11.9 million, dates to 1927 and is an early collaboration of Alden and Quentin Twachtman, sons of celebrated landscape artist John Henry Twachtman (1853-1902). He is considered one of the most original painters of the late 19th century.

Following a comparative exhibition alongside Monet, Twachtman produced illustrations for Scribner’s Magazine from 1888 to 1893, earning enough income to purchase a house and land in Greenwich. Here, he raised a family that included Alden (1882-1974) and Quentin (1892-1954), according to johnhtwachtman.com.

The brothers’ architectural collaboration was productive and lasted about 15 years, says Nola Taylor, researcher with the Greenwich Historical Society.

A 1926 article in the New York Times revealed the first evidence of their venture, reporting the purchase of 75 acres for development at Zaccheus Mead Lane. By the following year, the brothers had turned their attention to creating the three-story brick estate at nearby 69 Vineyard Lane.

“In 2001, this architectural gem was impeccably restored while sensitively updated and expanded, staying true to its original design while brought to the discerning standards of 21st century living,” said listing agent Joseph Barbieri with Sotheby’s International Realty in Greenwich.

Situated on 5.78 acres in the heart of midcountry, the historic home adjoins conservation land in a park-like setting. Mature trees offer shade and beauty amid a secluded retreat, replete with outdoor character. The property offers a meandering pond, tennis court, pool and spherical courtyard with a fountain at its center.

A greenhouse adjoins the main house, its façade naturally decorated with ivy. Adding to the storybook appeal are a stone pathway and seasonal landscape that pops with color, recalling the bright palette of John Twachtman’s Greenwichinspired scenes.

The interior of 69 Vineyard is as inspiring, with its six fireplaces, built-in wall sconces and bookcases and richly colored wood details. Exotic mahogany, monkey wood, chestnut oak and cherry millwork lend a timeless feel, while the walkout lower level is functional and beautiful.

The cozy master suite features its own fireplace and feeling of relaxation. The 10-bathroom estate home spans 10,000 square feet, hidden down a lushly wooded lane where the Twachtman brothers’ partnership was born.

By the end of 1927, the New York Times reported that Quentin had been developing private estates in Greenwich after old European models.

“From 1925 onward,” Taylor said, “the two brothers were responsible for designing and building more than two dozen homes … on Fox Run Lane, Vineyard Lane, Zaccheus Mead Lane, Pecksland Road and Mayfair Lane.”

Research of local newspapers and the town of Greenwich Building Department reveal at least 29 known Twachtman structures, of which 26 remain today, Taylor said.

According to blockshopper.com, the home at 69 Vineyard Lane belongs to the estate of George and Pamela Farr. George Farr died in 2006 in Greenwich, according to an obituary in the North County Times and the Californian. Born 1941 in Portsmouth, Va., Farr was former vice chairman of American Express. President Bill Clinton appointed him to the IRS oversight committee in 1999.
